Hello RVer’s I’m Ed, new to Pippi’s Pippenings, I am sure I will learn my way around this site soon. Must say even though the videos are several years in the past they still hold lot of good information. I enjoyed the solar power vid’s, but I am thinking more of a VAWT (Verticale Axis Wind Turbine) system, for my off grid power supply giving me 3 phase 240V, before converting to a 50 amp system. No I am no electrician, but I am sure this feat can be achieved. Now the pole I am hooked to has a 30 amp and 20 amp breaker, and after watching the conversion video I checked the pole out. Question I have then does this mean if both breakers are on I am getting 50 amps of power and and I can turn off the 20 amp leaving the 30 amp on? I did want to build my own 36 foot design for a travel trailer, maybe sometime I may be able to do that. When I do build it with a self generating fuel source in which I had been researching as well so I wouldn’t need to go buy propane. Any suggestions or pointers on tackling these en-devours would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Ed, welcome to the community!

To address your question about whether the 30A and 20A breakers mean you could get 50A service the answer is no but a not desirable yes.

    To describe the no:
What most people don’t know is that 30A service is what’s called single phase, it’s one stream of 30A. 50A is actually dual phase, so you could think of 50A service being like 70A of more service than a 30A system.

When I say yes, though it does mean that if you plug into a 30A receptacle you will get 30A and then plug a standard AZ outlet into the 20A you will get 50A of service but its not a traditional 50A service. Also the 20A extension cord will not be wired into your system so it would be like it’s own system that you’d independently plug appliances into.

    I hope that helps!
