Like many things, the situation will change year to year.
The Slabs or Slab City, was at one time a lovely and peaceful desert scene on an old gov.land,, with a community bookstore, and golf course, potlucks,,
its hot so summers are very exreme, snowbirds came.
Last time i looked them up, there were more problems, hopefully resolved,, as in more homeless, coming thru, trash problems.
At one time there was a year round community.
there is a small town nearby,, there is no supplys at slab city.
Please research current scene there, as i said my info is badly dated..
but at one time people loved the “Slabs”July 2, 2017 at 5:33 pm #2560Gary RippleParticipantI was there 15 years go and it was a thriving self sufficient community. You didn’t have to worry about being attacked or mugged and you helped people out because you felt like it, not because someone was begging. At that time it was a sense of community. Everyone helped your fellow neighbor. And if you wanted to be left alone you camped on the outskirts and no one bothered you. I was away from there for a number of years and went back a year ago. I was shocked on how the quality of camping had degraded. Maybe the older I get. I’ve become more prejudiced. But the slabs looked trashy. There were some freakish looking people in one group that looked like leftovers from the filming of one of the movies like Escape from L A. It scared me enough that I just found the first place to do a u turn and left. I was so disapointed that it has crept into it’s present condition. 15 years ago you could take a hot shower in one of the collection conduits that was installed by the Army during world war 2. After the Army left the camp at the end of ww 2, someone had the forethought to channel the water from one of the hot springs to the conduit so anyone that wanted to partake could have a hot shower. Terrific engineering. Maybe its not as bad as what I observed, but it sure took my breath away this last visit. I still admire Leonard for his lifelong dream of building Leonard Mountain. God bless Leonard and I trust that he’s resting in Heaven now.
