I have a 1972 Cayo truck camper. Thinking about putting a composting toilet in it. Would welcome any thoughts on this.
I am a 74 yr old cross country truck driver. Probably in a few years I will live full time in the Cayo. Really enjoy your video’s.March 12, 2017 at 5:52 pm #2332PippiKeymasterHi Jack, thanks for asking a great question. I don’t know much about compost toilets but what I do know is that it’s not for me. I’ve seen some of these toilets, I know there are different types but the ones I’m familiar with is that you have a bucket that fills up with pee that you see visibly from the front of the toilet. And the rest needs to be carried out in a bag.
I’ve heard of the type that burns it and there’s probably other types. My personal preference is to be able to use water and wash everything away instead of hauling and viewing the bucket fill up. Ew gross! Visual and scent gross.
As far as having an incinerator in an RV, that sounds a little scary to me.
But remember, I’m no expert and that’s just an opinion.

Once again, as for incinerator ones – read the details carefully. Does take a bit of electricity for the fan, I believe. Also there is the noise factor of the burning cycle. As for composting – it just doesn’t work this way since almost nobody “composts” their toilet waste in a mobile living space. It requires a lot of space + time (about a year) to make a proper compost which is suitable for greens. So they don’t keep the waste around for long enough, nor do they provide the right environment. “Composting” toilets in RVs (I’m talking about these), both for vans and boats are really just “no chemicals until you dump it out”. That might be related to composting if you could dump the toilet into a location where it would compost, but that’s extremely hard to find in the USA at least.
