I was thinking of going with a VW Westfalia to tool around the USA. But then I saw how people can really live in a bigger RV that has got some room in it. I am 6’3″ and I think I may have to get over being a little cramped in a van. Does anyone have any sage words of wisdom on this topic?

Perhaps the best of both worlds could be accomplished by teaming up with a partner who has a bigger rig. In this way we could travel along together and when we want to venture into some rougher terrain we could do it with the Westy.

All comments are welcome. And thank you Pippi for this forum. Tusen takk.

It is possible to live or camp in a van but a van is too small…for me. If you want to stay with as compact a vehicle as possible and still want to stand up straight inside – all 6’3″ of you – and want to save on fuel, look towards one of the Sprinter-based products.

    A 6’3″ guy living in a Westfalia…might as well buy yourself a staright jacket…!

Thanks Roger, I will have a look. Perhaps I will rent a Westy and see if I can at least sleep comfortably in it. I think the lower bed is about 6′ 2″ long. I don’t mind dangling my feet over the end of the bed.

Hmmm…a Westy is OK if you are young and carefree, I guess…it’s just too small for me. Even Pippi tools around in a 34-foot motorhome and she’s young enough to be my daughter…’nuff said!

Westfalias are good for weekend camping but who would choose to live in one?

OK…I was driving this morning and was following a Winnebago Vista. The older Vistas were small Class C’s built on a VW Vanagon chassis. You could stand up straight in a Vista. Also based on the Vanagon was Winnebago’s Rialta; the Rialta is smaller than the Vista and you couldn’t quite stand up straight. Either one would be more suited to live in than a Westy.

I guess it just depends on if you stick to good weather and spend a lot of time outdoors. You wouldn’t want to spend a winter month in there… or at least, I wouldn’t, but I have a 31 foot RV and it’s more than enough room for us.
