Most RVers carry bikes but make poor use of them.

A mountain bike delivers access to the back country, a flow experience, and a particularly good form of exercise.

I have seen so many travelers that seem to drive from roadside overlook to roadside overlook, but never really explore much beyond the sight of their RV. The mountain bike, like hiking, opens up access to some spectacular back country.

Off road biking is also great exercise in that it has an aerobic component combined with high intensity, short duration exertion.

And while a very physical activity, the flow component (see The Rise of Superman) distracts the mind from the workout….immersive environment, element of risk, and flow neurochemical dump.

My RV route planning is organized around stops at mountain bike trails. I use apps like MTB Project, TrailForks and Singletracks to locate good riding opportunities.

The mountain bike is like a horse that does not require much feeding or hoof maintenance, and it will fit in many of the larger storage lockers. I ride an “old school” bike with 26″ wheels (vs modern 29ers) because it fits in my locker…it is also snappier and lighter on the trail.

You would be welcome to meet up with us and try my bikes. Or just get the MTB Project app and check out this world on your own. Beginner trails do not require a high end MTB bike to give it a try.

Could make for an interesting video series.

Mountain bikes are a great source of fun and exercise. As you say, they are compact and can easily travel in an RV compartment. Electric bikes have become a popular option, however you lose the exercise component. Bikes are a good way to see parts of the area not otherwise accessible strictly from the RV. You don’t have to feed the bike, but you will want to feed the biker. Thanks for the insightful post.
