Most all tow dollys have lights on them mounted on the fenders. Those lights are legal as long as there is no car on it. Once you put a car on the tow dolly, the rear of the tow car is generally more than 6 feet beyond the lights on the tow dolly unless you’re towing a Fiat. The federal or state law says that you have to have running, stop and turn signals on the rear of what you’re towing if more than 6 feet past the lights on the dolly. It’s one of those laws that you generally don’t get a ticket for unless you get into an accident or create a traffic situation by not having lights on the rear. A quick fix to get lights is to go to Harbor Freight to get a set of magnetic tow lights. (8.99 on special right now) . Just set on roof of car or on the trunk. Run the wires inside the car, out the driver door and under the hood and out by the grill to hook up to your RV. They usually come with a 4 flat connector so you may have to piggyback the wire to your wires on the tow dolly or get a compatible plug for the tow lights. The next step you do which is more permanent is to run a 4 conductor cable all the way back to the rear lights. You can buy a wiring kit that has diodes in it to keep the wires from backfeeding the 12 volt signals back to your RV wiring system. On mine i used ty-raps to tie the cable down under the hood. Run it under the floor mats and under the rear seat so its not in your way and so you don’t have to run the wires each time. I terminate it at the grill and use a jumper cable between the car and the RV. When not towing and im disconnected, i just take the jumper cable, coil it up and store it in the trunk. Hope this wasn’t too long, irregardless of what you use to activate the lights for the back of your tow car, use something. Be safe. Don’t depend on the tow dolly lights or depend on the rear lights on the rear of the RV. Those both help, but the best is the lights on the rear of your toad…..
