Heh! Nice. My mom got me those curtains when I was a kid. They were sitting in a box for a while & I didn’t feel like going shopping for new curtains for the rig just yet.
My grandparents had an Airstream made nearly 20 years after this one, for a while. They loved it & we were able to accompany them on trips with our motorhome. ‘Twas part of the inspiration for me to get one similar. Since mine isn’t an Airstream, I have a bit more freedom to make custom mods & use non-Airstream parts. I’m going to keep with the essence of this rig, though.
The cabinets are original & were made from aluminum. The ceiling & walls are covered by 1/16″ thick plastic panels. Thankfully the engineers had additional foresight when they installed them: the panels at the top center of the rig crown the curved side panels. This way if there is a leak in the metal roof, the water still rolls off the crown & onto the side panel instead of dripping into the rig interior.
With all these rains sweeping through Phoenix, I’ve had plenty opportunity to study & fix leaks. I learned a particularly useful lesson re: water dripping in from above the window frame. If the rig features metal rain gutters above windows as this one does, check whether there are even thin gaps between the rig sidewall & metal rain gutter. If so, apply RTV silicone sealant to close the gap.
The walls are thick when compared to modern rigs (about 2″), and include insulation.
Doing some work on cabinets, doors & water system this weekend. Gearing up for bigger installs later this month.

The kitchen & work area renovation is nearly complete 🙂
Using some old curtains from the early nineties. They fit the rig. Considering a change-up. We’ll see…

Hey Pippi & Roger! Pippi, many thanks! It certainly is in a league of its own. Roger, you’re absolutely right. Sometime next year I may have to buy/make a new AC cover out of aluminum to match the rig better. The current cover is showing its years. I have been doing limited renovations inside as I adjust to life in the rig. I’ve been meaning to put up more photos and video of the renovation, but I simply have been out of time. I expect to start posting more by February.
